Tejaswini Sawant an Indian shooter from the small town of Kolhapur, has done India proud by becoming the first Indian woman to win gold at the World Shooting Championship and has also equalled the world record en route to winning the gold medal.

Born 12 September 1980, this Maharashtrian mulgi returned home from Munich on Monday to a warm welcome upon her arrival. Sawant represented India at the 9th South Asian Sports Federation Games in 2004 in Islamabad where she helped India win gold medal. She was selected to represent India at Commonwealth Games ahead of Asian Games gold medallist Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat and world record holder Suma Shirur after winning 5 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 5 bronze medals at the national championships. In 2006, she won gold medals in Women’s 10m Air Rifle singles and Women’s 10m Air Rifle Pairs events at the Commonwealth Games at Melbourne. Sawant won a bronze medal in 50 metres rifle three positions at the 2009 ISSF World Cup in Munich.
