The moral police are seen everywhere but seldom when the common people are in danger. They are the self proclaimed upholders of Indian tradition, culture and its beliefs. The Sri Ram Sene or the Shiv Sena or the Bajrang Dal workers demonstrate their love and so called respect for the ‘Indian culture’ by molesting girls wearing jeans and vandalizing Valentine’s Day celebrations. But they forget that every religion respects expression of love so long as it is not derogatory. Perhaps they fail to realize that their actions are not only disrespecting they are also insulting and totally against the Indian culture.
Moral policing has to come from within. Every one of us is a free citizen and as per the Indian Constitution, we have freedom to adopt the cultures and values which we like. We are free to do what we like. These groups focus only on women and not on men. Indian culture is not only about women. Men also form a part of it.
Eve teasing, molestation and rape (attempts or the act) are all against the Indian culture. Then why no one from these organizations come forward and raises a voice? Why such heinous crimes are completely ignored and side tracked? Does indulging in such acts uphold our traditions? Is this what our scriptures from the past have taught us? We as writers can just raise voices and create public awareness on this issue. It is the common public who has to actually act against such evil and prejudiced forces.
