General Silk care tips
- Do not keep silk clothes in water for a long time. As soon they are washed dry them immediately.
- Quickly clean silk sarees and use good quality mild detergent for washing.
- Separately wash the border, pallu and body of silk sarees.
- Do not use chemicals in washing silk sarees as they may damage silk and
end up in reducing its life substantially. - If silk Saree gets stain wash it with cold water immediately.
- Silk sarees should be ironed on medium heat.
- Do not fold silk sarees on same folds again and again. Keep changing the folds from time to time.
How to care for Silk Saris
To remove stains from silk saris
- If it is oil stains use Shikakai powder. You can use shampoo to remove mud stains. Don’t use strong detergent or Vanish to remove the stain.
- Removing stains from silk saree is not an easy job. It is not at all safe to wash them with hands. Dry cleaning is the only method that can remove stains from silk safely. Even attempting to remove stains with water is not recommended as silk may loose its color. Scrubbing or pressing could ruin the fabric.
How to store the silk cloths / Sarees
- Cover your silk saree with cotton cloth. Remember silk is a natural fabric which requires breathing, and cotton allows air passing.
- Never cover it with plastic, as it traps moisture, which in turn cause yellowing and mildew on silk.
- Silk is favorites with moths, so store cedar chips or balls with your silk saree to keep the bugs away.
