Are you a shopaholic? One fifth of women are shopaholic. Elizabeth Hurley does it alone and Madonna did it while nine months pregnant.
Experts believe 10 per cent of the population, and possibly 20 per cent of women around the world, are manic, compulsive shoppers. Oniomania is the technical term for the compulsive desire to shop, more commonly referred to as compulsive shopping, compulsive buying, shopping addiction or shopaholism.
This thrill of shopping is fleeting. Like drug addicts, compulsive shoppers often report feeling acute withdrawal symptoms when they can’t get to the mall to buy something. It gives them a high when they hand over their credit card or they come out of the shopping mall with 5-6 large bags containing goodies.
If you have ever felt any one of these, think again. You could be in the early stages of being a shopaholic
Symptoms of being a shopaholic
Similar to other compulsive behaviors, shopaholic sufferers often have following. Answer these questions:
- Do you experience the highs and lows associated with shopping?
- Do you experience moods of satisfaction when you are in the process of purchasing?
- Does shopping seems to give your life meaning while letting you forget about their sorrows.
- Do you feel uneasy if you have not done shopping for few days?
- Your conversation with your friends and colleagues revolve around shopping?
If your answer to three or more questions above is YES – you are a shopoholic.

Hi! My website is going to publish an article about thrifty options for shopaholics — i.e. clothing swaps, thrift stores, etc. The picture in your article came up in a search for “shopaholic.” May we use it with our story? We would give full credit to the original photographer and link to this site.
Please let me know whether you have the rights to this photo, and whether we may publish it on our site.
Thanks for your time,
